What is Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology?

“Oral Medicine focuses on nonsurgical management of oral diseases including the management of oral mucosal and salivary gland diseases; (2) temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain; (3) oral complications of systemic disease; and (4) dental management of medically complex patients within its scope of practice.

Oral Pathology focuses on the identification and management of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial regions through microscopic, clinical, biochemical or other forms of examination.  Oral Pathology includes histopathologic analysis of tissue samples, the investigation of causes and effects of diseases.”

Dr. Amanda Gruza, Specialist in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology:

BIO: Dr. Amanda Gruza graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, College of Dentistry in 2010 and subsequently completed a one-year General Practice Residency (GPR) at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Dr. Gruza then spent several years in private practice as a general dentist, and also supervised dental students as a part-time clinical faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry. In 2019, Dr. Gruza  completed the four-year, hospital-based combined oral medicine-oral pathology residency program through the University of British Columbia. Dr. Gruza is now a board-certified Oral & Maxillofacial Pathologist, as well as a board-certified Oral Medicine Specialist. She currently works at Saskatoon Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology and in the Saskatchewan Health Authority as an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist and Oral Medicine Specialist. She also teaches University of Saskatchewan undergraduate students and post-graduate medical residents. When she is not at work Dr. Gruza loves going on adventures with her husband and children.

Dentists and Physicians can refer patients to Dr. Gruza at Saskatoon Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology by filling out the secure online referral form. After you have completed the form, please make sure to press the “Complete and Send” button at the bottom to automatically send us the referral. The security and privacy of patient data is one of our primary concerns and we have taken every precaution to protect it. 

Routine referrals: there is a waiting period of approximately 1 year. Please specify on the referral if the patient that you are referring is available for short notice appointments. Thank you for understanding.

Urgent referrals: we will contact and book the patient promptly. Urgent referrals consist of: cancer suspected, acute lock jaw or suspected vesiculobullous disorder.
