After Arthrocentesis (TMJ Lavage)

After an arthrocentesis, rest the affected joint, apply ice to reduce swelling for 24-48 hours, then switch to heat, and take prescribed pain medication as needed. Follow a soft diet to avoid jaw-disrupting foods, stay hydrated, and avoid activities like driving or operating heavy machinery if you received IV sedation for 24 hours following your procedure. Monitor for signs of infection, such as increasing redness, swelling, or pain, especially after 72 hours, and contact us for concerns.

Immediately After the Procedure

  • Rest the Joint: The affected joint may need to be rested from 4 to 24 hours depending on the joint and local anesthetics used.
  • Limit Activity: Avoid strenuous activities, driving, operating heavy machinery, or signing legal documents if you received sedation for 24 hours after your procedure.
  • Apply Pressure: A small amount of bleeding from the site is normal, but apply pressure with your thumb for 10 minutes if significant bleeding occurs.

Pain and Swelling

  • Apply Ice: Use ice packs for 20 minutes at a time for the first 24-48 hours to help reduce swelling.
  • Use Heat: After 48 hours, switch to a moist heat pack on the joint to help resolve swelling.
  • Take Medication: Take any prescribed pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, or antibiotics as instructed.

Diet and Hydration

  • Follow a Soft Diet: Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods like scrambled eggs, pasta, or cottage cheese to avoid strain on the joint, especially if it’s a jaw joint.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, or sports drinks.
